OSCAR NOMS!
The 2012 Oscar Nominees were announced this morning!
You know what that means, it’s time to come up with pun-filled dishes for the Oscar party! AKA Oscar Noms. (Thank you, David LeGault or Jack Terpstra. I can’t remember who made that pun last year.)
Here’s a few that have come from years past:
(Blue Valentines)
(Firthday Cake for Colin Firth’s Best Actor nom. When he...

MLK Book Club
If you’d like a bit more than the occasional inspirational quotes in January and April, here’s some books that I have found very insightful. (There are definitely more great ones out there. These are just the few I’ve read.) I mean, you might not, because we totally live in a post-racial society now, but just in case.
Martin Luther King Jr. - Why We Can’t Wait and Strength...

2011 in Song: Snapshots
Oh, Darling! - The Beatles
2011 was the year I was brought into the world of karaoke. A welcoming land that will have you practicing songs in your car and making a fool of yourself in front of people who don’t care. With an almost weekly routine, I went through lots and lots of songs, many of them duds, but this was one song I really enjoyed doing. It was even well received (and NOT...

Anna's Top Five Books Read in 2011
Dandelion Wine
“I’ve always known that the quality of love was the mind, even though the body sometimes refuses this knowledge. The body lives for itself. It lives only to feed and wait for the night. It’s essentially nocturnal. But what of the mind which is born of the sun, William, and must spend thousands of hours of a lifetime awake and aware? Can you balance off the body, that...

Anna's Top Five Films of 2011
5. X-Men First Class
Just a straight-up good time. Fun 60s feel with just the right combination of kitsch and kicking ass. James McAvoy was a treat and Michael Fassbender, as always, was flawless. Made me wish this was the Magneto origin movie it was originally supposed to be. This film also wins the award for best cameo of the year. I won’t spoil it for you.
My one complaint: the entire...

I'll probably post this once every year.
Because I still know people who think it’s a real conspiracy.
I drove past a church yesterday. Their sign read something like, “Christ is the reason for the season. Don’t X him out!”
“X comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, translated as Christ” - Xmas

dimanche.
(To be perfectly British) had a glorious lie-in this morning.
Got a HUGE, new (to me) bed from my folks. Huge meaning a full-sized. It feels like a king compared to my twin. Definitely going to sleep diagonally tonight. We had to rearrange my entire room to accommodate it, but I’m satisfied.
Went shopping and had lunch with my mom. She bought me new sheets and a new outfit. I kind of...
Slow times round this here blog.
Here’s a few things to tide you over.
Have a couple new posts on my other blog.
One about Halloween.
The other is the first in a series I’m queuing up currently, involving a bunch of old family photos.
A couple weeks ago, I read a play by Howard Zinn about the life of Emma Goldman. Then Feminist Ryan Gosling posted this. Perfect.
And finally, some silly puppies for good...

You owe reality nothing and the truth about your feelings everything.
– Richard Hugo.
One of my favorite quotes on writing, specifically poetry. It comes from an essay called Writing Off the Subject. The thing is chock full of great advice for writing and poetry newbs (like myself). I highly recommend clicking that link.

I think I have a bruised rib.
Saturday night as I was heading to my car, I realized that I had forgotten something inside.
I attempted to jog back to my door, but slipped on the wet grass and straight-up spread-eagled it on the lawn.
The worst part was that I was in a Catwoman costume at the time.
I stood up, shaking my head. “That was not very catwomanly at all.”
Now my ribs really hurt. I think I’ll...

-Hang on, is your name Wesley Snipes?! That’s insane.
-It’s insane that the actor Wesley Snipes has that name. If you saw a picture of him and a picture of me and you were asked who should be named Wesley Snipes, you’d pick the pale Englishman every time. Every time, Liz!

The Big Sexy Problem with Superheroines and Their... →
Was going to post this when I first read it via Paulie. But I forgot.
It’s just a really great article.
Four of the seven “New 52”s I put on my pull list are superheroines, because this issue has always really intrigued me. Needless to say, Catwoman #1 was disheartening. I think Paul’s tweet said it best, “When I saw that last page from Catwoman, I was all like:

Generic Movie Title Here.
I just caught myself in one of those character-introduction scenes. You know, the one where they follow the character home from work and show how lonely and pathetic they are?
Empty apartment. Prepared dinner for myself. Sitting at the table to eat it, napkin on my lap. I chastised myself on my posture and sat a little straighter. All while Harry Connick Jr. sings The Way You Look Tonight.

“All this means that there are three possible ways in which the church can act toward the state: in the first place… it can ask the state whether its actions are legitimate and in accordance with its character as state… Second, it can aid the victims of state action. The church has an unconditional obligation to the victims of any ordering of society, even if they do not belong...
