Randy Scouse Git - The Monkees
As always, the death of a musician prompts one to spend some time with their music. Been listening exclusively to The Monkees since the news of Davy Jones’ death yesterday. Made a little more interesting by the fact that I just bought a “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd.” LP last Saturday. (and no, there’s no oxford comma in the album title. I’m sorry.)
I called my dad today and said, “I forgot how great The Monkees are!”
He said, “Uh, no. I’m sorry. You’re mistaken.”
Granted, it was a sort of blasphemy for any self-proclaimed music lover to enjoy The Monkees in his day. (This was before irony existed, remember?) Probably similar to legitimately enjoying The Jonas Brothers now. I would most likely laugh at my child if they called me in the future and were like, “Mom! The Jonas Brothers! They’re so great!”
Well, sorry, Dad. The Monkees are just plain good. This song is a special favorite. Just look at Micky hamming it up, and screaming, and scatting. And Davy rocking it out on the drums. <3
ps: Fun fact: Micky Dolenz was the voice of Arthur in the first season of The Tick.
